Well, i didn't really use a gradient mask, but here's the masking technique I did use.

Number 1 is the original

Number 2 is a rough selection using the lasso

Number 3 is entering quickmask mode

Number 4 is after I cleaned up the mask in quickmask

Number 5 is the resultant selection when leaving quickmask mode. Save this selection.

Number 6 is the inverse of that selection

I made a copy of the image and applied the selection in step 5 to one layer and the selection in step 6 to the other.

Notice that the masks are inverted from each other.

This lets me adjust the foreground and the background independently. In this simple case I suppose I could have just used saved selections, and not bothered with different layers.


If you were going to use a gradient mask you would have used the gradient tool in quickmask to have a gradual change over the image. This would let whatever changes you made to the layer with the gradient mask on it be more or less visible depending on the mask.
