... not a dumb question at all. Basically you should set your workspace to AdobeRGB, have an accurate monitor profile (Adobe Gamma is ok for crts but not lcd monitors), and use your printer's profile for view>proof setup. There are a couple options related to printing. You can convert to the printer's profile and select rendering intent and then turn off colour mgt in the printer driver, or try something like sRGB for conversion and allow the printer to pick the rendering intent (not as good an option).
