--I have been playing with high pass sharpening as a substitute for USM. It seems very effective and less destructive. I would appreciate knowing what others have learned about this technique. For those who have not tried it, here are my steps:
1. duplicate background layer and switch that new layer's mode to soft light
1. click Filter>Other>High Pass
3. at this point, I frequently oversharpen the image in preparation for step 4
4. if desired, reduce layer opacity to taste to reduce sharpening effect
