I find it alot quicker to use a screen or multiply layer for exposure and a soft light layer for contrast. I use 2 curves layers. The first is add dynamic range by moving the shadow and highlight data to the extremes. I use a temporary Threshold layer to find these settings. This adds the punch to the image. Then I add another curves layer to fix any color cast. I find it much faster than using just curves for everything. With the 4 different layers I can fine tune much easier.
