cspringer did a very fine job performing and explaining colorizing. Most books have easy to follow instructions.
The pattern, of course, is not moire, but the famous "matte" finish. There are some ways to minimize it when scanning and several ways to reduce it afterwards. The most intriguing is the use a Fourier Transform filter (a photoshop plugin). The boys and girls at Retouchpro have been experimenting with it for some time and have some excellent information and tutorials. Here's an example of what it can do to the matte, along with a little Neat Image touchup.
