Here is an easy way to add a mask in Elements.


1. Open picture.

2. Add a Levels adjustment layer but don't edit it

3. Copy background layer and move it above #2. (i.e., if you want a gaussian blur with a gradient or fill with solid color for a vignette).

4. Hold the Alt key and click inbetween Layers 2 and 3. The hand icon will change and will LINK the 3rd layer background copy above the Levels layer.

5. The Levels Mask now acts as a mask for the above layer.

That's it!.
