I have seen a number on threads here about painting with light. I find the concept to be rather ambiguous. One can "paint with light" in lots of ways. Andrzej Dragan has some excellent low key images. Some, IMHO, are over the top and call attention to the technique itself. I added a Learning Gallery to my site that demonstrates how to apply a low key light effect that leaves the image looking like a photograph rather than a painting. If there's interest, I'll add more Learning Galleries that explore other ways to "paint with light."
