B&W conversion

I read an interesting article in this month's Outdoor Photographer, by John Paul Caponigro, about converting from color to B&W.
Unfortunately, I must be totally dumb, because when I tried to follow his step by step, nothing went right at all!
Just the first part being
- target a single chaannel, select all, copy, reactivate the RGB channle and paste as a layer did nothing with me!
Furthermore, he says he has an action for this (bless him) "on Adobe's website". I've been all over the shop at the website and found zilch!
Anyone have better luck and can point me in the right direction?
