I think that image is a very high quality color original that he has burned and dodged. Without having a high quality original, it's hard for us to approximate.

But just to play, I used his image, desaturated it, and then painted the color back in. I certainly can't compete with Dragan or this great image, but we can play, right? Here's the results of my playing with the eye:
