I first made selections based on color (red shirt, blue pants, etc.), saved those selections, then added them together using calculations. I also played around with increasing the greens in the background to separate bg from foreground, then used color range to make the selection. Saturating colors and changing their balance can also be used to separate subject from bg. Don't worry about how it looks, you're just making a mask. Of course, leave an original clean copy to later apply the mask to. I got very close using this method, but a little painting was needed in the end to clean it up.
