taken from Total Training for Photoshop CS...

I thought this was a good demonstration of the power of 16bit processing vs. 8bit...however, TTFP didn't necessarily endorse 16bit for all pics because of file size and other considerations. Some edits are more destructive than others so in some cases it wouldn't make any difference.

I took my dog's "Bird? No, I haven't seen your Bird!" picture.

I then made a 16 bit copy. I made the same Levels OUTPUT adjustments on both pictures, moving the outputs to the center to create a grey picture (as done in TTFP).

Finallly, I applied Auto Color. The posterization is very obvious on the 8 bit.
