Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and new to photography in general. I've always had an interest in it but have never actually taken the leap into getting started. I'm now living and working in South Korea and have decided that if I'm ever going to do it, now's the time. I'm planning trips to Thailand, China, Japan, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietam.. what better time? I have been doing research for quite some time now.. and I had come to the conclusion that the Nikon D40 would be the best camera for me to start out with. It was a less expensive model that seems to be very highly rated for beginners, and I had a friend who started out with one and recommended it as well. Being in South Korea, it makes it a little more difficult to get a camera. The language barrier alone causes a problem.. but the friend that recommended the camera to me got it from a little shop nearby with a man who I guess, orders them for you online. Unfortunately however, when I went to talk to him he said something along the lines of it not being available, or that it is no longer being made... or something (there's that language barrier problem again!). Now, I've decided that buying online is probably my best bet. I'm a little nervous since it means I won't actually get to hold and see the camera before purchasing.. but I don't have a lot of options, and I need to move quickly if I want to have any time to learn how to use the camera a little before going to Thailand in December. I've been looking at E-bay, and there are a few Nikon D40s, but they're not at the best price.. I've also seen a Canon Rebel XT at a decent price. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for camera shopping online (that can ship to South Korea), or any thoughts as to another good (affordable) beginner's camera that I could look at as well. I understand that it's mostly about what works best for you, but as I mentioned, I don't really have the option of trying them out. I want a camera that is light and easy to carry around. Mainly I will be using it for taking pictures while traveling. I like to take pictures of landscapes, etc.. and I also like to use it at nighttime. Sorry for the long winded post.. but any help would be much appreciated! :)
