Should I downsize 12megapixel photos...?

Just a little sometihng I dont understand...
Lets say I have a 6m camera that takes good images and displays them well even at 100% size in photoshop.
Then lets say I also have a 12m camera that takes good images but they lack detail and are soft at 100% size in photoshop.
If I resize the 12m one down by around 50%, will it therefore pack more of a punch and show more detail when viewed again at 100%.
I am a little confused as to the real benefit of so many megapixels you see and am sure I read that someone on here always downsizes his 12m photos.
