As a complete beginner to photography, I've just purchased a Nikon D40. I've started reading the manual, searched the internet, as well as dp review forums in endeavouring to find an overview of photography - that relates to the range of functions available on my D40 - or any modern SLR, for that matter.

Given the way my mind works I need to know the whole picture before focussing on the component parts. From reading the manual etc I know shutter speeds, ISO sensitivity, focal lengths, aperture sizes etc are important, but I don't know if I've covered all the necessary variables necessary to take a good picture.

Can anyone therefore point me in the direction of a basic and +systematic+ overview of the variables I need to consider in taking a good picture and how these weave together?

Hoping someone can help
