Why does telecommuting have such a bad rep anyway? It saves gas, takes up less space and keeps people happy in the area of work/live balance. Why would a web developer need to sit at the same desk, 9 to 5, every day?

Sounds like a control issue to me - or even poor management... I'd be suspect of any job or boss that was too inflexible to allow for such a simple and modern reality of work life.

Team building isn't always a matter of in-person communication. That's just one element of good working relationships and productivity. The others are a properly skilled workforce, good management and planning and respect for one's colleagues.
