Glad the DP1 review came up so quickly (relatively speaking). Imagine if all important releases were covered that fast?! What a useful site this would be! ;) Anyway, enough TIC. No surprises in the review however relatively timely it may be. Well, one surprise for me, that it did video at all - even if it is "low quality" and there's no zoom during recording (for obvious reasons). I must have missed the video spec from the release - not that it's a primary consideration for that camera, but no excuse for not having the options available in such a machine (esp at that price). No mention of lack of optical IS in the conclusion pros/cons. Other than that, v thorough and equally negative, and understandably so imho. I echo the sentiments about giving a nod to Sigma for trying, but I am deeply concerned that such a remarkably poor effort at such a remarkably high price might actually kill off the segment they tried to start before it actually got a chance. That imho would be a long term catastrophe for global photographic product consumers. Fingers (and toes) X'd that some other makers (or even Sigma) do a much better job ASAP as this type of machine could/should be what most of us carry most of the time. - And that's exactly why the main DSLR players won't be touching it with the proverbial excrement-covered stick. They'll just keep selling plastic lenses for $$$ thankyou very much. So, I suppose we are still looking to the likes of Pany to do what should have been done some time ago and produce an EVIL or a small, large-sensored, compact with a good, fast lens. That in turn has issues because Pany/Oly/etc are seriously 'sensor-limited' relative to the big players. So, quid-pro-quo, any effort from them will not have sufficiently high quality to pull people away from the DSLRs of the main players unless it is v CHEAP and offers some major sensor and processing improvements from what we're used to from 'the rest'. So, perhaps there is no hope? Who else can we turn to, to pick up the ball and take it somewhere where it can be all it can be? Lol. Ahhh, three cliches in one sentence. Great. Seriously though, who can/will realistically do what consumers really need and release them (most of the time) from a big bag of plastic/glass. Nikon/Canon won't do it. Nor will Sony (assuming they stay in the DSLR market in the long-term despite an embarassing performance so far). Oly/Pany/Sigma/Pentax (& Samsung) can't (not 'properly' anyway) due to sensor, processing and/or storage medium choice issues... The rest are omitted as non-runners although Richo or Leica could in theory do something - but it would also not be perfect for similar reasons and certainly not at the combined price/performance level required (for it to dominate DSLR*). *And 'it' (the high-quality-large-sensored compact with a good, fast, stabilised zoom-lens) SHOULD/CAN *dominate* DSLR in terms of being the best choice for the vast majority of shooters most of the time and therefore selling in HUGE volume. But who can realistically do it? It's clear that whoever it could be, is not in any great rush... Perhaps those that could have already weighed it up and decided they just can't do a good enough job for it to catch on. Sigma's effort is unlikely to encourage them to try. Shame. Here's hoping! -- If we do it right the first time around, how will we sell the upgrade?! ;) Keep photography wild. Where is that Sony 'flagship' anyway? And more importantly, will it come in pink?! Lol. Edited at 5/20/2008 10:36:58 AM, 5/20/2008 (GMT) | |
