I am sure this has been brought up before, but I'd like to discuss a modular camera design, with parts (specifically sensor) that is interchangeable - easily removed and replaced.
It seems easily feasible with today's technology, especially now that everyone seems to be getting onboard with CMOS.
The advantages are numerous. One is cost, obviously - no sense in throwing out a perfectly good body as sensors develop. Another could be opening up the niche market for special sensors - not many of us would shell out to buy a whole new camera *just* to get a monochromatic sensor, but if we could just buy a sensor and stick it into our current bodies, I'm sure there'd be a ready and willing market for it. Same with IR sensors.
Heck, even the manufacturers could make money. Imagine selling not just a body and a sensor, but a body, a regular bayer filter sensor, a monochromatic sensor, an IR sensor, a Fuji S-R sensor. I also think consumers would be far more willing to upgrade if they didn't think they'd be throwing away a body or throwing away a sensor when upgrading to a new camera.
